Quick start with the ICST AmbiPlugins project templates in Reaper

The templates provides a quick introduction and initial understanding of how to create Ambisonics content using the ICST Ambisonics Plugins. The templates provide a quick introduction and initial understanding of how to create Ambisonics content using the ICST Ambisonics plugins.

Two "Reaper project templates" 1) are installed by the 'ICST_AmbiPlugins_macOS.pkg' installer, to get you started with the workflow more quickly.

! Please note that for these templates, the free "dearVR AMBI MICRO" Plugins must be installed!

Let me briefly introduce you to the two Reaper project templates:
  • A: ICST AmbiPlugins MonoEncoder template
  • B: ICST AmbiPlugins MultiEncoder template

A: The ICST_AmbiPlugins_MonoEncoder template

In Reaper open the ICST_AmbiPlugins_MonoEncoder template:
  • Reaper: File-> 'Open project template' --> ICST_AmbiPlugins_MonoEncoder
We have configured the ICST_AmbiPlugins_MonoEncoder template so, that you can start immediately with 8 x mono audio sources in Ambisonics. The default setting is the Binaural decoding, so you should work with headphones.
Each track receives a 64-channel audio bus with an "ICST MonoEncoder."
The mono tracks with their encoders are collected with the "ICST Ambisonics Master Bus" (red) and then forwarded to the ICST AmbiDecoder and the binaural decoder as the final B-format.
The decoder outputs are routed to the Reaper Master Track and your audio interfaces.

! So make sure you have muted one of these tracks when monitoring!
  • AMBEO DearVR Micro --> TOA (16ch) B-format to 2ch binaural signal as standard
  • ICST AmbiDecoder --> two speakers

Each track can be operated with an individual Ambisonics sequence and encoder parameters. However, this method can quickly become confusing with an increasing number of tracks.
With the "ICST Multi-AmbiEncoder", we have contributed a template that can process up to 64 audio sources in one encoder. The sources can be distributed in up to eight groups per ICST MultiEncoder.

After opening the Reaper project Template, you can choose between 1st-order and 7th-order, as shown below.
! Please note that you should do this for all active encoders, as the encoder plays in 1st order in default mode !

B: The ICST_AmbiPlugins_MultiEncoder template

First open the ICST MultiEncoder template: in Reaper: --> File --> open project template--> ICST MultiEncoder template
After opening the Reaper Session Template, you can choose between 1st-order and 7th-order as shown below. Please note that you should do this for all active encoders, as the encoder plays in 1st order in default mode.
In contrast to the MonoEncoder template, this setting applies to all incoming sources that are to be encoded. This also applies to the encoding parameters, which you can set as follows:
  • Doppler on/off
  • Distance Encoding
  • Air Absorption
All these parameters can be saved as an XML file with ‚save' or loaded again with ‚load.'

The Audio Routing in the ICST AmbiPlugins MultiEncoder:

The ICST MultiEncoder receives 16 Mono Audio sources in a 64-channel buses. A 64ch send routes the encoded B format to the 'ICST Ambisonics Master Bus' (red).
The 'ICST Ambisonics Master Bus' is connected to the 64ch bus of the 'ICST AmbiDecoder'.

! So make sure you have muted one of these tracks when monitoring!
  • AMBEO DearVR Micro --> TOA (16ch) B-format to 2ch binaural signal as standard
  • ICST AmbiDecoder --> two speakers

Another function of the ICST MultiEncoder is the ability to create and animate groups.
With the MultiEncoder, you can place and move up to 64 sources in one instance. The sources can be divided into eight groups, each of which is animated individually.
! Remember that when groups are formed, the sources are animated relative to the group point.2)
